A good HR department has to be manned by competent staff. A PHR certification or a Professional in Human Resources Certificate is what is considered to be essential for a HR person. A PHR certification is an entry level certificate for HR professionals just starting out on their careers.

To be certified at an advanced level, a SPHR or a Senior Professional in Human Resources certificate is necessary. The test requires a high amount of preparation, if good grades are desired. A brief outline on how to obtain the certificate is given below:-

A high schooler with about four years of experience in the HR field, a graduate with two years experience, and a post graduate with a year’s experience are eligible to enlist for the course. The candidate must also have organisational skills, good command over language, have experience in an environment of reporting to seniors, have a pragmatic approach as well as capable of implementing strategy. The course itself will cover six areas – employee and labour relations, HR development, risk management, workforce planning, total rewards and strategy management. A candidate should score above average in all six areas to pass the course successfully. The course is conducted in two levels – preliminary and executive and study material is supplied by the Institute.

The course fee for the PHR examination is approximately USD 40, with a processing fee of USD 75 added to it. The certificate is awarded by the Human Resources Certification Institute. Examinations are conducted twice a year in December – January and May – June. The examination duration is for three hours and there are 175 multiple choice questions to be answered. There are many computer based testing centres all over the globe. There is a compulsory re-certification every three years, without which the certificate loses its value.

The certificate adds tremendous value to the resume of a HR professional and sets them on a higher career path. A career in HR is enhanced with the PHR certification – it adds another feather to the cap and elevates the individual higher in the ranks. The road to the top gets a little easier with this certificate under your belt.
